Chapter 16: The Bet, The Question
Chapter 16: The Bet, The Question
Sandaokou is a town, and their paths crossed during the high school entrance exam, when they were both assigned to take the exam there.
After the math exam, at lunchtime in the cafeteria, two groups of people were discussing the questions and somehow ended up discussing them together.
"No, sis, we only discussed a topic together about two weeks ago, and you think I should remember you?"
Lin Chuan was speechless. Even if he hadn't been reborn and decades had passed, he probably wouldn't remember their interaction from half a month ago.
Lin Hongmei, on the other hand, saw clearly that her daughter was beautiful, came from a good family, and had been praised in every way since she was a child, which made her somewhat arrogant.
She wasn't angry that Lin Chuan didn't remember her; she was angry that she remembered Lin Chuan, but Lin Chuan didn't remember her.
Seeing her daughter somewhat distraught, Lin Hongmei found it amusing, but what she found even more unbelievable was something else:
"Xiao Chuan, you've only finished junior high?"
"Sis, when my brother-in-law asked me that day, I already said I was 17, which means I'm in the third year of junior high."
"Um, judging from your usual words and actions, I always seem to forget your age."
"There's no way around it, poor kids have to learn to be independent early."
Lin Hongmei didn't believe a word Lin Chuan said, but she didn't delve into it. Instead, she asked a question that people all over the country love to ask students:
How are your grades?
"It's not very good. I can't keep studying, that's why I'm thinking of making some money during the summer vacation."
"You're lying. You're better at math than me, how could your grades be bad?"
Well, it seems Liu Hongge lost that discussion, no wonder she's been holding a grudge ever since.
Lin Chuan ignored her, chatted with Lin Hongmei for a while longer, then got up to say goodbye and leave.
"Don't go yet, wait for me."
After Lin Hongmei finished speaking, she went into her room, leaving only Lin Chuan and Liu Hongge in the living room.
"Don't be so smug. I lost last time, but I'll definitely win next time."
Hearing Liu Hongge's childish and immature remarks, Lin Chuan suddenly wanted to tease her, and said with a smile:
"Hey, don't wait until next time. I'll give you a question now. If you can answer it today, I'll admit I was wrong. If you can't answer it, then you can call me uncle from now on, okay?"
"Tch~, why should I only be told I'm wrong when I answer correctly, but have to call you uncle when I can't answer? I'm not stupid."
"If you're not satisfied with the bet, you can change it. We'll just have a question with a two-digit number or less."
Hearing that the question was within two digits, Liu Hongge couldn't resist the temptation:
"If I answer correctly, you grant me three requests; if I don't, I'll call you uncle."
"Tch, who do you think you are, Zhao Min?"
"Just tell me if you dare or not."
"Okay, here's the question: 3 people staying at a hotel together, 30 yuan per night."
Each person pays 10 yuan, and together they give 30 yuan to the boss.
Later, the owner said there was a discount today, only 25 yuan, so he took out 5 yuan and asked the waiter to return it to them.
The waiter secretly kept 2 yuan and gave the remaining 3 yuan to the 3 people, 1 yuan to each of them.
ask:
At first, each person paid 10 yuan, but now they have received 1 yuan back, meaning each person only spent 9 yuan.
Three times nine equals twenty-seven, plus the two coins the waiter hid, that's 29.
Where did the remaining dollar go?
After finishing his sentence, Lin Chuan leisurely sipped his tea. This question, which appeared to be a math problem, was actually a logic problem.
If you don't turn your head around, you'll never understand.
At this moment, Lin Hongmei came out and handed Lin Chuan a bag:
"Take this to your sister to play with."
Lin Chuan opened it and saw a pink wired remote-controlled car inside. This thing probably wasn't cheap, but Lin Chuan didn't hesitate, took it, and said happily:
"Thank you, sister."
He wants to play with remote-controlled cars too.
Carrying the bag, Lin Chuan was about to leave when Lin Hongmei handed him a stack of money: two hundred-yuan bills and five ten-yuan bills, totaling two hundred and fifty.
"Sis, what are you doing? I can't take your money."
"Take it. You work so hard every day, do you think I'd take advantage of you?"
Lin Chuan then remembered that he had told Lin Hongmei that it would take him four hours to get to the county, but in reality it only took two hours.
The system's stat allocation includes endurance, and speed is high from start to finish.
He chuckled awkwardly:
"Sister, it's no trouble at all. I can't accept this; it's too much."
"Not much, those two pig stomachs are both top-quality stuff from Baquan. Boiled pigs are good for the stomach, so they're not cheap. Take them."
As they were talking, Lin Hongmei reached out and forcefully stuffed the money into Lin Chuan's hand.
After a brief exchange, Lin Chuan backed down and reluctantly accepted the money.
"Sis, the idea that pig stomach can soothe the stomach is a myth. Those things are actually scars from parasites. It's best to cut them off before eating."
"Isn't it said that boils on pig stomachs are caused by eating poisonous snakes, and the more you eat, the more nutritious it is?"
Lin Chuan explained to Lin Hongmei how boils are formed, comparing scientific explanations with folk remedies, and he didn't know which one she believed.
When Lin Chuan left, both mother and daughter looked conflicted. Just as Lin Chuan got downstairs, rode his bike, and prepared to leave...
"Feed".
Looking back, I saw Liu Hongge chasing after me.
"Three times nine is twenty-seven, plus two times twenty-nine, so where did the remaining dollar go?"
Lin Chuan took out ten yuan, and Liu Hongge took it dumbfounded, but then heard Lin Chuan say:
"First of all, I'm not calling you 'Hey,' you should call me 'Uncle.' Here, this is a gift from your uncle. Take it and buy some candy. As for that dollar, you can think about it later."
I told you not to be so arrogant. You're lucky you can sleep tonight. Your mom even gave me a piece of her mind. I think you're the one who's a complete idiot.
After saying that, Lin Chuan rode off on his bike, in a great mood. When he passed by the department store, he went in to buy some seasonings that he had forgotten to buy yesterday.
However, he discovered that the only seasoning was MSG, which came in a glass bottle that Lin Chuan had never seen before.
Lin Chuan didn't see any star anise except for Sichuan peppercorns (which were occasionally available). Sichuan peppercorns were ridiculously expensive, so Lin Chuan simply didn't buy any.
He bought two bottles of MSG, one bottle of soy sauce, one bottle of vinegar, and also weighed out one pound of dried shiitake mushrooms and two pounds of white sugar.
Sugar actually required sugar coupons, which Lin Chuan didn't have, so he paid an extra five cents per pound, for a total expenditure of 17.6.
Lin Chuan pedaled his bike very fast, arriving home before three o'clock.
When he entered the courtyard, he found that all the bedding was drying in the sun. He touched it and found it scalding hot, so Lin Chuan turned it over.
Upon entering the house, I found them all sleeping on mats spread on the floor. These days, there's no such thing as a nap that can't exceed half an hour.
They would eat, tidy up, and then go to sleep. They would usually wake up around 2 a.m. and then go back to work in the fields at 2:30 p.m.
Lin Chuan didn't wake them up. He went to the kitchen, took out a bamboo bow, strung it, and nocked a bamboo arrow to practice his aim at the earthen slope.
It's unclear whether the change was due to the slingshot being at max level or if Lin Chuan simply had a natural talent for shooting.
He had only practiced for about ten minutes, and his accuracy was already pretty good.
Seeing this, Lin Chuan increased the distance from ten meters to twenty meters. Just as he was getting his aim down to almost perfect, the system suddenly made a sound.
