Fallout, Second Life

Chapter 331 - 331

Chapter 331 - 331

The mood was incredibly jovial as the new folks began to filter in through the Vault door and began to look around at their new home. Of course the Vault Door opening was quite a loud affair and so there was a small crowd of people from inside the Vault who came out to meet the new group, curious, since it was not yet time for a guard rotation. What followed was a party. A big one. The vault was now incredibly full of life with over 100 people, new faces, old friends, reunions, and the like ignited a strong feeling of camaraderie as the alcohol, what little was left in storage, flowed freely, and the kitchen was turned into a full on restaurant with multiple chefs turning out dish after dish.

Before Adam had gotten back he was worried if the new refugees would be accepted or not, however not only were the people living in the vault the welcoming types, having been refugees from Naper themselves, but there were some who already knew each other as residents of Chicago. Not too many, but enough that the two groups quickly merged into one friendly blob.

The children too were a huge hit in the Vault, there was still a bit of uncertainty about how they would be cared for in the long term, but in the short term there were plans made about how to care for them, and even one or two were outright adopted. In all likelihood, given some time, all 12 children would be adopted too.

The party had started simply because of the jovial atmosphere and as a means to integrate the two groups but when Adam announced that both War and Pestilence had been dealt with and Chicago was free from the threat of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse the mood only grew even more energized.

Percy seemed to quickly integrate himself into the larger party, which was a funny comparison to Deccanus who slipped out at the first chance he had. Dr. Tott seemed to be taking his new role very seriously already. He demanded that Adam submit himself to a checkup when the party was over. Adam chose not to argue, both because of the force he was using to make Adam feel like he had no choice and the fact that he really would be better off getting a hand from him.

Paxton stuck around the party for a time but left after he had eaten his fill. Which, speaking of food, Adam took note of the food they had in stock. They had more than enough food thanks to Deccanus' efforts recently, however with the massive increase in Vault population they would need to have someone take up the role of keeping inventory of their foodstuffs so the Vault would not starve. Jefferson confirmed the plants were growing well but still a long ways away from producing food to eat, so in the meantime Adam would have to make another trip to Midway at some point and buy more food.

The party continued until around midnight when the majority of the people began to filter themselves into the various rooms they selected for themselves. Adam was thankful the Vault was built with the intention of sustaining a viable human population for long term genetic experimentation as this meant there were enough rooms to house this many people, and even far more if there was ever a need. The fact of the matter was the Vault was huge and had many more rooms for people to stay in than he ever saw himself needing.

However while the groups seemed to integrate well Adam made sure to keep everything locked up still, once more he would not hand Pip-Boys out to anyone. He still had a ton, far more than he could probably ever hand out in his lifetime, especially at this rate. But keeping a tight grip on them kept the Vault safe. You can never be too careful after all.

Adam was just happy that he had the entire day to relax and take it easy. He had been on such a work-based mindset recently so having this downtime, in his home, with so many new friends, was perfect for him to destress. There was undoubtedly a lot of work still to do. But for the time being there was no longer any great reason to force himself out of the Vault for the next few days. He could rest, finally, and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

The next day came peacefully. Adam went down to the cafeteria to see a very lively atmosphere, even in spite of how hard everyone partied last night. There were two chefs behind the counter happily feeding everyone the chosen meals of the day.

After Adam grabbed his own meal and enjoyed a nice, long, peaceful breakfast. He decided to get to work. He actually had a lot he had to do inside the Vault. He had been so busy outside that he had a list piled up, now was as good a time as any to begin handling his backlog. For starters he wanted to make sure Dr. Tott was settling in fine, as well as get his check-up. He was ordered to, after all. And who was he to say no to a doctor?

"How's the space? Doctor?" Adam asked as he entered the Medbay, now organized a bit and with Dr. Tott inspecting some of the equipment while Teresa Maylord, Jefferson's pregnant wife, was busy typing away at the computer, probably handling files for the Doctor. Adam was curious, but not enough to ask. It was simply clear they were setting up the space and information for easier future use.

"I hesitate to speak in hyperbole." He said cautiously as he turned around to look at Adam. "However I am finding the space well furnished, moderately stocked with medical instruments, and plenty of equipment to make my life much easier. The only thing I lack is any true medical supplies. There are no Stimpacks, Rad-X, Med-X, or anything else of note. There was one singular Rad-Away, but that is hardly enough to run a medical facility with." He said as he gently pushed up the glasses resting on his nose.

"I'm sorry, I can work on finding medical supplies for you if-" Adam began, only to be cut off by Dr. Tott.

"Don't bother. Though of course I will not say no to any medical supplies you bring me. I am now the head physician of this settlement, I take that role very seriously. Do not worry, I have the necessary knowledge to produce medical supplies here, myself. It may take some time, but I should be able to stock this place up." Adam smiled and nodded.

"Wonderful! I'm glad I could count on you."

"I am curious though. Are you sure you do not want me to charge for my services? It seems as if there is no cap circulation down here, was this by design?" Adam paused to consider his question.

"Well… no…" Adam admitted with a half shrug. "It just sort of happened that way. But I don't even know what I would charge for, or even if I should. Right now it seems fine, everyone pitches in, right?"

"Well far be it from me to critique. But I suppose these things will start on their own. From my understanding this Vault was only recently re-populated, I wouldn't be surprised if I were you if something started in time. It was merely a question, was all." Adam paused to consider but ultimately decided that unless the economy that was created naturally was disruptive it was fine to leave it alone. "I digress. I must say though that Mrs. Maylord here has already proven to be an excellent hand. I think I will find my work quite stimulating down here." He said with a soft smile.

"Wonderful!" Adam said with a smile of his own. "Now, as requested, I came to have you check me out and tell me I am not dying." Adam joked and then took a seat on the examination table.

Dr. Tott took a few moments to run some tests, check Adam's condition, and take a few measurements such as height, weight, and blood pressure before finally speaking again.

"I have bad news." He said with a deadpan look on his face. "You are going to live a long and healthy life. No early outs for you." He grinned a small bit.
