Chapter 19: When it rains, it pours
Chapter 19: When it rains, it pours
Before dawn, there were already quite a few people waiting at the dock.
When Jason and his two companions arrived at the dock, they were met with a pack of wolves staring intently at them.
"Jason, we're being watched. There's absolutely no way we can do what we did last time," Brent said gravely.
Andy, who had been panning for gold in the Bering Sea for over a decade, said helplessly, "Jason, we definitely won't find much gold if we go out to sea now. Any gold we do find will just be swarmed and stolen by these people."
"Brent, call my dad and old Hart over here." Jason had an idea in mind, but whether it would work out depended on Brent and old Hart's thoughts.
Soon, Albert and his group of four arrived at the port.
"Jason, you guys are being watched!" Little Hart sighed, but he understood what these people were doing, after all, Jason's achievements were really enviable.
Albert asked, "So, you brat, what do you want us to do here?"
"That's how it is, since now..." Jason laid out his thoughts, and the more he spoke, the more strange the looks in the eyes of the people around him became.
"How about we leave it like this?"
"I think it's okay."
"Let's give it a try. With the two of us here, who dares to lay a hand on us!"
Albert and old Hart discussed it, and the more they talked about Jason's idea, the more feasible it seemed.
"Jason, you're such a rascal!" Little Hart glanced at the gold prospectors around him, suppressing a laugh, and silently mourned for the prospectors for what was about to happen.
"Getting old, getting old~" Andy couldn't help but shake his head at Jason's youthful behavior.
Brent, meanwhile, peered around eagerly, a sly grin spreading across his face at the other prospectors. He wholeheartedly approved of Jason's plan.
Albert left with Ada, old Hart left with young Hart, and Andy and Brent headed towards the Lillian.
Before long, two gold-digging ships and a small gold-sucking ship appeared before everyone's eyes.
"Damn it, how could they do that!"
"Damn it, two gold-digging ships went out to sea with a gold-sucking ship!" "Should we follow?"
"Follow me for what? Two dredgers are working together; our money-grabbing vessel can't even get close."
"Never mind them, follow them. As long as they find gold, the risks don't matter!"
Some gritted their teeth and kept up, while others gave up, but the large gold-digging ships didn't care about any of that and immediately went full speed ahead. This time, they were going to make a killing!
I wandered around aimlessly on the Bering Sea.
But because of Jason's previous reputation, no one backed down this time, and they gritted their teeth and followed.
"Jason, shall we go back?"
"return"
After two hours, three gold-digging boats reappeared at the dock, leaving the gold prospectors who followed them somewhat dumbfounded.
"Albert, are you no longer going overseas to pan for gold?" someone asked.
Clearly, they'd been tricked, but they still weren't going to give up.
"Hey, hey, hey, the gold rush season has only just begun! I'm planning to make a fortune this year!" Albert shouted back, but his laughter carried a deeper meaning.
After lunch, under the watchful eyes of many gold prospectors, the three ships set sail again, and just like in the morning, they cruised for two hours before returning to port.
Some gold prospectors couldn't take it anymore and noticed the three ships returning home, so they gave up immediately.
But many are still unwilling to accept this.
Some novice gold prospectors couldn't stand it anymore and shouted, "Albert, are you deliberately playing games with us?!"
Albert glanced sideways, disdainful: "Kid, you don't have to follow us. If you want to eat our food, you'd better show us some respect!"
The group went home, ate, and slept, leaving many gold prospectors who thought Jason and his crew had gone out to sea at night to suffer through the night.
The next day was the same. By this time, only a few gold prospectors remained, each leaving with a grumble and curse.
They gave up and stopped playing with Albert and his friends.
As Albert said, he had money and time to play with them.
Albert and his team have achieved their gold-mining goals for the year, but they haven't made much money yet. If they continue playing around, they'll end up spending a lot on gas.
"Finally, no one's here."
"Haha, Jason, that trick of yours is a bit of a lose-lose situation."
Jason laughed and said, "It's okay, I have other plans. Who knew they'd only last two days?"
"Tell me, tell me," Brent said curiously, really wanting to know Jason's next plan.
"Let's not talk about that anymore, we need to hurry up and head out to sea to pan for gold." With that, Jason looked at Old Hart and invited, "Old Hart, come with us this time."
Although Old Hart was helping out of a voluntary manner, he still felt obligated to repay the favor. He had initially agreed to help Young Hart, but ultimately he hadn't seen the gold.
Old Hart was brought here for the later plans, but unexpectedly these gold prospectors were so useless, they only lasted two days.
Old Hart shook his head and refused, saying, "Jason, we won't go out to sea with you this time. If we discover a large gold mine, then call me."
There are countless gold prospectors on the Bering Sea, but Jason has the air of a king.
He was getting old, and at some point he handed over the gold mining business to Little Hart. Leaving a favor was more effective than anything else.
"Okay, you guys can't not come when I call you," Jason joked with a smile.
Little Hart patted his chest confidently, then said with a serious yet humorous expression, "Don't worry, we'll definitely outrun rabbits!"
The three ships went their separate ways. Albert and his men headed straight for the mining area and continued digging according to the nautical chart given to them by Jason, while Old Hart and his men were nowhere to be found.
As for Jason, his whereabouts are still unknown.
······
As it turns out, nothing is ever smooth sailing. When things are going well, unexpected things will always trip you up.
Jason, his face flushed from the underwater equipment malfunctioning, climbed up the rope from the seabed.
Although Brent and Andy issued warnings immediately, Jason was gasping for breath as soon as he boarded the boat and removed his diving gear, under the combined pressure of heavy diving equipment and lack of oxygen.
The very real problem is that they don't know how to fix this thing.
Andy, in particular, rolled his eyes at Jason and Brent's gazes: "Don't look at me, I'm not a mechanic, this thing needs to be returned to base for repairs."
The three of them just stared at each other blankly.
There's nothing they can do; they only know how to use it to judge minor issues, but this thing is already smoking, it's a miracle it's not completely unusable.
"Let's go back," Jason said helplessly.
This is an uncontrollable factor. In addition to the uncontrollable winds and waves in the Bering Sea, equipment strikes are even more troublesome.
It has been two days since we set sail. Although we have made some gains, compared to the previous two times, the gains are pitifully small.
"Jason, this kind of harvest is the norm when panning for gold in the Bering Sea, and this harvest is among the best of all gold panners," Andy said softly, noticing Jason's frustration.
"I see"
Jason nodded, then looked at Andy: "Don't worry, I'm fine, I'm just a little resentful."
He used a satellite phone to notify his mother, Lillian, to purchase a new feeding device. He had the money now, and repairing it was too much of a waste of time. Besides, who knew when it would break again? It was better to just replace it with a new one.
Andy and Brent worked together to remove the anchor points. When the ship arrived at the port, Lillian was already waiting in her car.
After exchanging greetings, the broken equipment was simply thrown onto the vehicle, and the new supply equipment was loaded onto the ship before setting sail again.
As if things weren't going to go wrong, just when everything was getting back on track, the sea started to churn again.
As the waves grew larger, we had no choice but to return to port; safety was the top priority.
Especially after the weather report from the coast guard came over the ship's radio, everyone turned back to port without prior arrangement.
The moment the coast guard issued the notification, it meant that the Bering Sea was temporarily closed!
No one objected; everyone went full throttle.
