Chapter 16 The Harvard Elite
Chapter 16 The Harvard Elite
After being scolded by old Joseph, the brother-in-law blushed instantly.
It's worth noting that Daniel followed in his father's footsteps and also graduated from Harvard. Although he wasn't a top student, the Harvard name still carries significant weight in this day and age.
Old Joseph, however, did not foresee that his eldest son had no interest in politics, or at least not at all, as can be seen from his answer to this question.
Daniel's statement is certainly correct, but applying it to someone like Coolidge is clearly too superficial.
"Daniel, are you serious?"
Old Joseph's voice wasn't loud, but it was like a knife, precisely piercing everyone's hearts.
The brother-in-law was at a loss, his face full of embarrassment. He had read all the news on the family news wall and even studied it, but who knew that his father would not follow the syllabus, which made him look foolish in public.
"I asked you why President Coolidge withdrew from the election, and you told me his son injured his foot playing tennis. Are you a Harvard graduate or a newspaper vendor on the street?"
"I'm sorry, Father," Daniel choked, extremely embarrassed, but quickly managed to squeeze out a sentence, "I wasn't prepared this time, but I won't do it next time."
That's what they say, but old Joseph doesn't believe it. Although he wouldn't physically punish his eldest son, he could still make a little sarcastic remark.
The next moment, he put down his cutlery, smiled slightly, and said to Daniel:
"Daniel, you are a Kennedy child, carrying the family's honor. You should be striving like me. But what have you been doing for the past six months since graduation?"
"You know how fast Duesenberg's car can go, you know which club has the prettiest girls. I spent thousands of dollars to send you to Harvard, not to teach you how to throw parties."
Old Joseph, still not satisfied, continued his accusations:
Do you know what Harvard's motto is?
"That's the truth," the brother-in-law blurted out.
"But you lack even the most basic common sense, so what are you talking about regarding truth!"
"Do you know why the Kennedy family has gotten to where we are today? Is it because I'm sitting at a dinner table, chatting away with girls? No! It's because I work sixteen hours a day on Wall Street, I eat boxed lunches with shipyard workers, and I outwit those shameless guys in Hollywood! Every bite of food you eat, every car you drive, is earned this way!"
Old Joseph grew angrier as he spoke, and felt a pang of regret, much like the feeling of a man who had been spoiled in his later years.
"And you, Daniel, you're not even as good as your twelve-year-old brother. At least John knows shame."
What happened next is self-explanatory: the brother-in-law lost his right to continue eating dinner and was asked to go to the kitchen; he might even have his allowance deducted.
Fortunately, he was smart enough to eat some bread before dinner, so even if he couldn't finish the leftovers, it wouldn't have a significant impact on him.
In short, this kind of thing is a piece of cake for Daniel, and he has a lot of experience in dealing with it.
Daniel breathed a sigh of relief. Although he had been scolded, he had at least survived this quiz and could now enjoy some more freedom.
As for old Joseph cutting off his allowance, he didn't really care, since Mrs. Rose could still give him some, so it didn't really affect his quality of life.
Next came Gia, the most sensible of the four children, and the one Old Joseph worried about the least.
He simply asked about Jia's studies, then smiled with satisfaction and didn't ask any more questions.
However, after looking at his daughter now, old Joseph still reminded her:
"Gia, you are now the daughter of the Kennedy family and the lady of the Ludwig family. Don't believe those rumors. One day your name will be on the social media, and you'll be a force to be reckoned with in Boston."
"In a few years, or even less, your younger brothers will all enter politics and have a long way to go. They need someone to stand behind them, someone to show the family's 'normality' and 'decency' to the voters, and that person is you."
Jia didn't speak, she just nodded.
From childhood to adulthood, her communication with Joseph has always been like this: simple and efficient, to the point that people can't even tell they are father and daughter.
Now that Joseph Sr. has shifted his focus from business to politics, this not only means a transfer of resources but also a change in the lifestyle of the entire family.
And so, after the meal, there were originally seven people, but now only four remained.
Finally, Joseph turned his gaze to Luther, his eyes filled with curiosity.
Indeed, he arranged the marriage when he was planning to run for Boston local council and needed a good image.
However, he has too many scandals and his shameful past has been repeatedly dug up, making him lose face.
For example, they may be suspected of stock market manipulation, smuggling and selling alcohol, or double-crossing.
In short, what happened during this period was extremely detrimental to his image, and at one point it almost affected his entire family.
Left with no other choice, old Joseph came up with the idea of holding this wedding, finding a European nobleman in name only to marry his daughter, in order to divert public attention.
In fact, his strategy was very successful. Now all of Boston is talking about his son-in-law, and nobody cares where his money came from.
Regardless, he had no intention of giving his son-in-law any special treatment.
At Kennedy's house, everyone is treated equally.
"Luther, although I know this isn't appropriate, I'd still like to hear your perspective as a European on President Coolidge's withdrawal from the race?"
"I know that you Europeans have always looked down on Americans, thinking that Americans are too snobbish, too short-sighted, and only think about making money, and don't understand art at all."
Old Joseph wasn't asking this casually; he already had a plan in mind.
If this son-in-law is truly an idiot, he certainly wouldn't let his daughter suffer a loss; he would simply find some excuse to send him back to Germany, and at worst, give him some money.
But if this guy really has some skills, then old Joseph wouldn't mind turning the charade into reality and taking him as his son-in-law.
Although Europe is currently in decline and noble titles are no longer valuable, nobles are still nobles, and who knows what will happen next?
"First of all, I think Daniel said part of it. His son's death from illness was indeed the reason for Coolidge's withdrawal from the election, which is only natural," Luther affirmed his brother-in-law.
But the next moment, he immediately changed the subject and continued:
"But I believe that the only reason President Coolidge withdrew from the race, besides the reasons we've already mentioned, is that he had no other choice."
"Oh, what do you mean?" Old Joseph suddenly became interested.
"The prosperity that America has enjoyed over the past few years has been built on credit, supported by tariff barriers, and kept afloat by the meager war reparations from Europeans. And these things won't last much longer."
