Chapter 42 Professionals
Chapter 42 Professionals
Song You led Jiang Milu along the village path toward his own yard.
The subtle awkwardness between the two gradually dissipated with each step they took, replaced by the familiar rural atmosphere.
"This place has really changed a lot." Jiang Milu looked around. In her memory, this place was still a wasteland, but now it has become more lively.
"I'll just make do with this." Song You carried the heavy earthenware jar, feeling as if he were carrying a heavy piece of the past.
Soon, the courtyard of the farmhouse came into view.
The handwritten wooden sign at the entrance looked somewhat rustic in the sunlight.
In the courtyard, several tables of guests were enjoying their meal, the air filled with the rich aroma of food.
Jiang Milu stopped at the courtyard gate.
She took a deep breath, and the aroma of food, earth, and plants invigorated her.
"Why is the air here so fresh?" she asked, somewhat surprised. This feeling was even more comfortable than in the ecological experimental base at her school.
Her gaze was quickly drawn to the vibrant vegetable patch in the corner of the yard.
As a graduate student majoring in modern agriculture at Xiangnan University, she immediately noticed the difference.
She walked quickly to the edge of the vegetable patch, squatted down, and her gaze swept from the cucumbers with water droplets on them to the bright red tomatoes, and then to the lush green vegetables. The expression on her face slowly changed from initial surprise to utter disbelief.
"Song You, something's wrong with these vegetables!" Jiang Milu stood up, turned around and looked at him, her tone serious. "The appearance of these cucumbers, the size and color of these tomatoes, where did you get these special seeds? Let me tell you, even the intensively cultivated varieties in our school's experimental fields are only this good."
Song You was overjoyed inside, but on the surface he acted as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"I bought ordinary seeds from Grandpa Wang at the village entrance, one yuan a packet." He pointed in the direction of the village entrance and said in a serious tone, "It's probably because the soil and water in my mountains are good, plus I take good care of them."
"Nonsense!" Jiang Milu immediately retorted, "No matter how good the soil and water are, you can't optimize genes! This growth is completely against the laws of genetics."
She leaned closer and examined a chili pepper plant closely, muttering to herself, "The plant is robust, the leaves are thick, and there are no obvious signs of disease or pests. Its disease resistance is too strong."
She looked up at Song You, her gaze unusual.
"Your skills are impressive! You've been keeping a low profile." Jiang Milu exclaimed in amazement. "When I leave, I'll buy a few packets of seeds from Grandpa Wang to take back with me. I want to see if it's your skill that's amazing, or if his seeds have come to life."
Song You simply smiled and said, "This is my specialty for attracting customers."
Jiang Milu chuckled.
Song You was very relieved. Without his intervention, no one could detect any difference. Even if it was treated, it would only have a special effect on others, and they wouldn't be able to detect anything else.
He had tried many methods before, and from all angles there was no risk.
"Alright, stop standing there like an idiot, the guests are waiting." He took the backpack from Jiang Milu's hand, pointed to the stone table in the courtyard, "Sit down for a while, have some water. I'm busy here right now, but I'll take you to see the fruit trees on the back mountain when I'm free this afternoon."
Jiang Milu glanced at him: "Okay, I won't cause you any trouble. I'll go home first and change my clothes."
Song You nodded, watching her turn and walk towards the village, before carrying his things into the kitchen.
Business was booming at noon, and Song You was busy in the kitchen all by himself. It was only because of his Druid class that he was able to do his job with ease.
When he came out of the kitchen carrying a dish, he paused for a moment.
In the courtyard, Jiang Milu was deftly clearing away the bowls and chopsticks on an empty table.
She changed out of her pretty dress and into a simple white T-shirt and jeans. Her long hair was tied into a neat ponytail, and she looked refreshing and capable.
"Why are you back?" Song You walked over, somewhat surprised. "Didn't you say you were going home? Didn't I just trouble you?"
Jiang Milu stacked the last bowl, looked up, and glared at him.
Song You immediately shut up and stepped forward to help.
"Don't give me that." Jiang Milu's cheeks flushed slightly as she shoved the bowls and chopsticks into his arms. "Go wash them quickly, I'll take care of the outside."
Watching her turn away to greet another table of guests, Song You carried a pile of greasy dishes back to the kitchen.
The two worked together very well, one focusing on internal affairs and the other on external affairs.
We were busy until after 2 p.m. before the guests gradually left.
After Song You finished cleaning up the kitchen, he walked out into the yard. Jiang Milu was sitting at the stone table, sipping her herbal tea, with fine beads of sweat on her forehead.
"Take a break," Song You said, sitting down opposite her.
"Finally finished." Jiang Milu breathed a sigh of relief. "I didn't realize your business was doing so well."
"Thanks to everyone." Song You refilled her tea. "Come on, now that we have some free time, I'll take you to see my precious fruit trees."
The two walked one after the other toward the back of the mountain.
Upon arriving at the orchard, Jiang Milu immediately got to work with her bag on her back.
She first carefully examined the peach tree that Song You had previously treated, and the surprise on her face was impossible to hide.
"Your results are amazing!" She reached out and touched the newly sprouted leaves, then looked at the healed bark. "Although the medicine and technique you used were a little off, by some strange twist of fate, the effect was so good. You're incredibly lucky."
Song You thought to himself, this is no luck.
Next, Jiang Milu inspected the other diseased trees one by one.
"This one has anthracnose, this one has gummosis, and this one has both aphids and spider mites." She pointed out the lesions as she looked at them, and they were almost identical to what Song You had sensed through the power of nature.
"A graduate student is a graduate student," Song You exclaimed sincerely.
"Alright, stop flattering me." Jiang Milu took out a pair of gloves and a pair of professional pruning shears from her backpack. "Talk is cheap, I'll give you a live demonstration today."
She walked up to the plum tree that was the most severely diseased and began to explain.
"Look, branches like these, which are completely dry and have disease spots, are just a nuisance if left to grow. They must be cut off." With a snip of her scissors, a dead branch fell to the ground.
"The cut should be smooth, preferably at a 45-degree angle, so that water does not accumulate and secondary infection of germs can be prevented."
As she spoke, she demonstrated, her movements professional and efficient.
Song You listened attentively and imitated her, handling the branches on the other side.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves, falling on the two of them.
"Hey, be careful!" Jiang Milu suddenly shouted and grabbed Song You's arm.
"it is good."
Song You adjusted his posture and aimed at the target.
Jiang Milu quickly let go and patted her face.
"Be careful." She turned around and focused intently on the branch in her hand.
Just then, Jiang Milu felt something furry brush against her feet.
She froze, her first thought being a snake.
"Ah!" she gasped, instinctively hiding behind Song You.
Song You was startled by her reaction and immediately became alert, following her gaze to look at the ground.
There they saw a creature about the size of a palm, covered in dark brown fur, looking like a little ball of flesh, tilting its head and curiously observing them with its innocent, beady black eyes.
It's a little wild boar.
It seemed very interested in Jiang Milu's jeans, and moved closer, nudging her pant legs with its still-developing nose.
"That's a wild boar." Jiang Milu was stunned when she finally saw what it was.
Song You was also somewhat surprised. He didn't expect these little guys to be so bold as to approach strangers.
He crouched down and reached out his hand to the little wild boar.
The little wild boar sniffed his fingers, and instead of being afraid, it stuck out its pink little tongue and licked them.
Jiang Milu's heart almost melted at the sight.
"So cute." She carefully squatted down and tried to reach out her hand.
Just as her fingertips were about to touch the wild boar's fur, a low, warning snort suddenly came from the bushes beside her.
Jiang Milu froze, and looked up at the same time.
A huge black head suddenly emerged from behind a bush that was half a person's height.
Those small eyes flashed with wariness and displeasure, fixed intently on Jiang Milu's outstretched hand.
