Chapter 8 Silly Roe Deer
Chapter 8 Silly Roe Deer
After receiving the gun, Shan Yaowen carefully inspected it. It was well-maintained, with no rust or damage, and the bolt was pulled back smoothly.
Loading a bullet, Shan Yaowen aimed at a tree trunk in the distance and fired a test shot.
A gunshot rang out, creating a huge echo in the mountains and forests, startling countless birds into scattering and fleeing.
Lin Hao watched Shan Yaowen's gun with envy. This rifle was far superior to his hunting rifle, both in power and range.
Hearing the roaring sound in the mountains and forests, Lin Hao suddenly felt that the hunting rifle in his hand was no longer appealing.
Compared to a rifle, what's the difference between what I have and a stick?
After firing a shot, Shan Yaowen grinned, stroking the gun in his hand with obvious delight. "This thing is still the best."
He had never touched such a good gun in his previous life; he mainly played with hunting rifles, and after gun control was banned, he hadn't even touched a gun again.
"How about we switch? Haven't you always liked my hunting rifle?"
Lin Hao inappropriately approached, even reaching out to grab the last Mosin-Nagant rifle in the box.
"Go away, this isn't for you. You should stick to hunting rifles."
"Hey kid, you were just asking to borrow a gun from my house, and now you're not even giving it a second glance, are you?"
Shan Yaowen chuckled, put his arm around Lin Hao's shoulder, and said, "You can play if you want, but I won't trade with you. These are all mine."
"Okay then, let me touch it." Lin Hao never intended to take Shan Yaowen's things; he knew that if it weren't for Shan Yaowen, he wouldn't even be able to see them.
After slinging his hunting rifle over his shoulder, Lin Hao immediately picked up the remaining Mosin-Nagant rifle in the box, seemingly unable to put it down.
Do you want me to teach you?
"No need, I can play."
After getting the gun, Shan Yaowen played with Lin Hao for a while longer before reluctantly leading him down the mountain.
He had originally intended to hunt some prey, but after the two fired several shots in the mountains, any prey that was caught was scared away.
Moreover, they went to town in the morning, and by the time they went up the mountain it was already noon. If they delayed any longer, it would be too late to come down the mountain after dark.
So after they packed their things, they headed straight down the mountain.
However, on their way down the mountain, they encountered a group of uninvited guests.
At first, Shan Yaowen didn't understand.
Why could they still encounter prey on their way down the mountain after shooting so much?
But after he realized it was a roe deer, he felt that it was not surprising at all that such a thing happened to them.
This thing runs fast, but it's incredibly stupid. If you chase it for a while and then stop, it will turn around and look at you, wondering why you stopped chasing it. It's so annoyingly silly.
Some experienced hunters don't even need guns to hunt roe deer; they can just grab a stick and shoot them.
Without him even saying a word, Lin Hao had already raised his gun.
"Don't rush, we'll each choose one later." Shan Yaowen held Lin Hao down before he could fire, then quickly unstrap his shoulder strap, took the gun in his hand, and began loading it.
Shan Yaowen was confident he could chase down and kill all the roe deer, but seeing that it was getting dark, he didn't want to waste too much time and decided to finish the job quickly by taking down a few.
The two men surrounded the group of roe deer drinking water. Bird quietly found a suitable shooting position, from which he could see the entire group of roe deer below.
There were 12 roe deer in total, 5 of them being large.
After spotting the roe deer, they cautiously moved forward, keeping a distance of over a hundred meters. They were afraid that if they got too far, Lin Hao wouldn't be able to hit it, and if they got too close, they might startle the roe deer.
These guys may seem silly, but they're actually quite perceptive.
Shan Yaowen chose the largest roe deer, which looked to weigh around 150 pounds, and the fur on its back had turned bluish-green.
Lin Hao chose one that was the second smallest in size.
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
After two gunshots, the group of roe deer remained motionless, raising their heads to look around as they drank water.
After the two largest roe deer in the herd fell to the ground, the remaining roe deer reacted and disappeared in a few swift movements.
There was absolutely no chance to fire a second shot.
"This roe deer is huge." Lin Hao walked up to the roe deer he had shot and nudged it with the butt of his rifle.
He's already dead, beyond any doubt.
"Yes, Da, do you want to continue fighting?" Shan Yaowen glanced at Lin Hao.
Hearing this, Lin Hao gave his brother a strange look. "They've all disappeared. How are we supposed to fight now?"
"Come on, I'll show you something new today."
Shan Yaowen would never chase other prey, but the roe deer is different.
This thing is unlike the wild boar we hunted yesterday. Once you kill one, the rest will basically keep running until they get hungry. Without hunting dogs, it's too difficult for a person to catch them.
However, if one roe deer is killed, the rest will run away, but they won't go very far.
Sure enough, Shan Yaowen and his companion chased the roe deer for seven or eight hundred meters and then saw the group of silly roe deer again.
Lin Hao stared wide-eyed at the roe deer leisurely grazing on the ground, unsure of what to say.
"Mosquitoes, if we shoot two and then chase them, can we wipe out this whole roe deer pack?" Lin Hao raised his gun and looked excitedly at the roe deer in front of him. It was the first time he felt that hunting was so easy.
"Yes, that's possible, but we can only fight this once."
Why?
Shan Yaowen looked up at the sky. "Do you think we can still hunt in the mountains tonight?"
Lin Hao glanced at the sky and saw that it was true. The weather was no longer dark enough for them to continue. The two of them had no torches or flashlights, and the only source of light was probably the half-box of matches in their pockets.
Two more shots were fired, exactly the same as before.
"Mosquito, you're really something. We grew up together, how do you know so much? You even know the habits of roe deer, and you even know where the guns are." After gathering the four roe deer together, during a break, Lin Hao looked at Shan Yaowen with amazement.
He used to think that this brother was just as idle as himself, but in the last two days he realized that Shan Yaowen was not ordinary. At least he was better at hunting than Shan Yaowen, and he even knew people in the state-run restaurant.
We grew up together, and we played together almost all the time except for eating and sleeping. How did you suddenly become so amazing, while I'm still like a complete idiot?
"Study more, and don't be so carefree all the time."
Seeing Shan Yaowen's pretentious and arrogant demeanor, Lin Hao felt a bit of a toothache. This guy really put on an act, and Lin Hao couldn't even refute him.
The two men cut down some wood in the mountains and then tied it together with vines to make a makeshift sled.
They pulled the deer all the way down the mountain, and when they reached a place where the road was easier to walk on, the two of them took out two thick wooden sticks, and each of them carried the two deer home.
Two roe deer, two guns, and some other miscellaneous items—a load weighing nearly 300 pounds—were carried on his shoulders. Only someone who works regularly could carry that heavy load.
Lin Hao was like this. Even though the two prey he was carrying were not as heavy as Shan Yaowen's, he was still swaying from side to side while carrying the two roe deer. However, he did not show any impatience on his face, but rather an excited expression.
I hunted these myself, so even if I have to carry them back one by one, I'll do it.
They stumbled and fell all the way back to the village entrance. The two were happy, but the families of the Shan and Lin families were anxious.
Although Shan Yaowen and Lin Hao were a bit lazy and unreliable in the past, they had never missed dinner at home. Today, not only did the two not come home for dinner, but they were nowhere to be seen even after dark.
Actually, it's nothing. People in their twenties are unlikely to get lost.
The main reason was that they learned from Lin Nian that the two had gone hunting in the mountains, which made both families anxious to go up the mountain to look for them, as the wild animals in the mountains were no joke.
Fortunately, the two groups met at the village entrance.
"My God! What have you two done?"
