Chapter 30 Love and Dreams in the Business World of the Republic of China: The Intertwining and Perseverance of Love and Career in a Turbulent Era

The Love Story of Lin and Gu: Love, Hate, and Struggle in the Business World of the Republic of China

A poor girl and a rich boy navigate the chaotic world of commerce hand in hand.

The morning sun shone through the streets and alleys of Shanghai. I stood at the entrance of the textile factory and took a deep breath. Today would be another busy day, I told myself silently. I, Lin Fangfei, though born into poverty, had risen through the ranks to become the representative and designer of the textile factory, thanks to the knowledge I gained at business school. Only I knew the hardships I had endured. I looked up at the sky, my eyes filled with determination. I was determined to revitalize this textile factory in the turbulent 1930s of the Republic of China.

I entered the textile factory; the workers were already busy at work. I headed straight for the design studio, and on the way, I ran into Old Wang, a veteran worker at the factory. "Good morning, Miss Lin," Old Wang greeted me with a smile. "Good morning, Old Wang, you have to make sure the quality of this batch of fabric is up to standard today," I earnestly instructed. Old Wang patted his chest and said, "Don't worry, Miss Lin, we won't be careless." I nodded slightly and quickly walked into the design studio.

Sitting at my design desk, I picked up my pen and began sketching new fashion samples. Just then, my assistant, Xiaomin, came in. "Ms. Lin, Mr. Gu is here." Hearing this, I was overjoyed and put down my pen to go outside. I saw Gu Zixuan wearing a sharp suit, his hair neatly combed, his tall and handsome figure shining brightly in the sunlight.

"Zixuan, what brings you here?" I greeted him with a smile.

"Fangfei, I came to see you and also to discuss our next press conference." Gu Zixuan looked at me tenderly, his eyes full of love.

We walked to a corner, and Gu Zixuan took a small box out of his pocket and handed it to me. "Fangfei, this is for you." I curiously opened the box, and inside was an exquisite brooch shaped like a blooming plum blossom. "It's so beautiful, Zixuan, thank you," I said with delight, my heart filled with sweetness.

"These plum blossoms are like you, blooming bravely in this chaotic world," Gu Zixuan said affectionately.

I pinned the brooch to my dress, a plain-colored cheongsam I designed myself—simple yet elegant. The brooch was like the finishing touch, making the entire cheongsam stand out even more.

Just as we were immersed in this sweet atmosphere, Mr. Liu, the factory's accountant, rushed over. "Miss Lin, Mr. Gu, something has happened." His face was very grim.

Gu Zixuan and I exchanged a glance, and my heart tightened. "Mr. Liu, what's wrong?" I asked anxiously.

"The supplier suddenly said they couldn't deliver the batch of raw materials we ordered on time, saying it was due to the political situation and that part of their factory had been requisitioned by the military." Mr. Liu wiped the sweat from his forehead.

My heart sank to the bottom; this was having a huge impact on our production plans. "Is there any other way?" I asked, frowning.

"Yes, we do have them, but the price is much higher than before, and the quantity is limited," Mr. Liu said helplessly.

Gu Zixuan frowned, thought for a moment, and said, "Fangfei, we can't just sit here and wait for our fate. I know some other suppliers, I'll go and contact them. But before that, we need to adjust our production plan and prioritize the use of our existing raw materials for important orders."

I nodded. "That's the only way, Zixuan. Thank you for your hard work."

Gu Zixuan patted my shoulder, "We'll face this together, there's nothing to be afraid of." He turned and quickly left the textile factory.

I returned to my office and began to revise the production plan. Just then, my good friend Xiaolian came to see me. Xiaolian was also a girl with a hard life, struggling to survive in this chaotic world. She was carrying a food box and said as soon as she entered, "Fangfei, I know you've been busy lately and haven't been eating properly. I made some of your favorite snacks, please try them."

I looked at Xiaolian gratefully. "Xiaolian, you're so kind." I opened the food box, inside were delicate plum blossom cakes, emitting an enticing aroma. I picked up a piece and took a bite. The sweet taste spread in my mouth, easing my tense mood a little.

"Fangfei, I heard something happened at your factory. Don't worry too much. There's always a way out," Xiaolian comforted me.

"Yes, I know, but the situation is rather tricky right now," I said with a sigh.

Xiaolian grasped my hand. "You're so smart and hardworking, you'll definitely be able to solve it. By the way, how are things between you and Mr. Gu?"

A blush rose on my face when I mentioned Gu Zixuan. "We're doing fine. He was just here a moment ago, and now he's gone out to help me contact suppliers for raw materials."

"Mr. Gu is such a good person. He is sincere towards you, so you must cherish him," Xiaolian said with a smile.

I nodded. "I know."

A few days later, Gu Zixuan returned, looking tired. "Fangfei, I contacted several suppliers, but the situation isn't very optimistic. They're either charging ridiculously high prices, or they're afraid to cooperate with us for fear of being implicated in the political situation," Gu Zixuan said dejectedly.

I bit my lip. "What should we do? If we can't deliver on time, our reputation will be ruined. How will we survive in this industry after that?"

“I’ll think of something else. I’m planning to go to Nanjing; there might be more opportunities there,” Gu Zixuan said firmly.

“Nanjing? The situation there is very complicated right now. Wouldn’t it be too dangerous for you to go?” I looked at him worriedly.

"For the sake of our textile factory, for the sake of our future, I have to give it a try." Gu Zixuan held my hand tightly.

I looked into his eyes and knew I couldn't stop him. "Then you must be careful. I'll wait for you to come back."

The day Gu Zixuan left, I stood at the dock to see him off. He was wearing a long black trench coat and a top hat, looking handsome and dashing. "Fangfei, don't worry, I'll be back soon," Gu Zixuan said to me with a smile.

I fought back my tears, saying, "You must come back safely." The ship slowly sailed away from the dock, and I watched his departing figure, my heart filled with worry.

During the days Gu Zixuan was away, I worked tirelessly at the textile factory, trying my best to keep it running. One day, while I was checking orders in my office, I suddenly heard a commotion outside. I went out to see what was happening and found a group of workers arguing with the foreman.

"Miss Lin, the supervisor wants to reduce our wages. How are we supposed to survive?" a worker said angrily.

I frowned and asked the foreman, "What's going on?"

The foreman said helplessly, "Ms. Lin, the factory is currently facing a tight cash flow situation and a shortage of raw materials. If we don't reduce wages, I'm afraid we won't be able to hold on for much longer."

I understood that supervising the work was a last resort, but the workers were also struggling financially. After thinking for a moment, I said to the workers, "Please don't argue. I know everyone is having a hard time. I assure you, your wages will not be reduced, and I will find a way to solve the funding problem."

The workers gradually calmed down after hearing what I said. I returned to my office and began to worry about where to find the funds. Just as I was fretting, Xiaolian ran in.

"Fangfei, I heard that a foreign businessman is interested in our textile factory, and he might be willing to invest," Xiaolian said excitedly.

My eyes lit up. "Really? Xiaolian, tell me about it!"

Xiaolian took a breath and said, "This foreign businessman is called Smith. He is quite well-known in Shanghai's business circles. He saw the potential in our textile factory, but he put forward some rather harsh conditions."

"What are the conditions?" I asked nervously.

"He demanded a 50% stake and significant say in product design and sales," Xiaolian said, frowning.

I fell into deep thought. The condition was indeed very harsh. If I agreed, it would mean losing half of the control I had painstakingly built over the textile factory. But if I didn't agree, the factory's current predicament would be difficult to resolve.

Just as I was hesitating, I received a letter from Gu Zixuan. He said he had made some progress in Nanjing, but it would take some time. Seeing his letter rekindled my hope. I decided to wait for Gu Zixuan a little longer; I didn't want to accept Smith's investment unless absolutely necessary.

A few days later, I was revising a sample in the design studio when Xiaomin ran in to tell me that Gu Zixuan was back. I excitedly put down my pen and ran out. There stood Gu Zixuan, beaming, followed by several people carrying some boxes.

"Zixuan, you're back!" I excitedly rushed into his arms.

"Fangfei, I'm back. This time I have good news," Gu Zixuan said with a smile.

He took me aside and said, “I met a patriotic businessman in Nanjing who is willing to provide us with raw materials at a reasonable price and also to provide us with funds to help us through this difficult time.”

When I heard the news, I was so happy that I burst into tears. "Zixuan, you are truly my savior."

Gu Zixuan gently wiped away my tears. "We are lovers, comrades-in-arms, and allies. It is only right that we face difficulties together."

Just as we were celebrating this good news, a loud bang suddenly came from the factory.

Lin Gu's Romance: Business and Love in the Republican Era

The struggles and love between a poor girl and a rich boy in Republican-era Shanghai.

I, Lin Fangfei, stood before the somewhat dilapidated factory building of the textile mill, my heart filled with anticipation for the future. The sunlight was a bit too bright today, so I raised my hand to shield my eyes, my gaze falling on the busy workers not far away. Their figures in this chaotic world were like a small but tenacious flame of hope in my heart.

I turned and walked into the factory, looking at the old textile machines, silently making plans in my mind. Just then, my friend Xiaolan rushed over, her hair a little disheveled, her eyes filled with anxiety: "Fangfei, have you heard? It seems something's happened with the Gu family. Zixuan might be facing some trouble." My heart tightened, and my face instantly filled with worry: "What trouble? Xiaolan, tell me quickly." Xiaolan grabbed my hand and whispered, "There are rumors that a batch of important goods belonging to the Gu family has been seized, and it seems to be related to the current political situation. Those people seem to want to make a quick buck off the Gu family." My heart sank. Gu Zixuan had always been committed to the reform and development of the Gu family business; this was undoubtedly a huge blow to him.

I didn't have time to think much and rushed to the Gu family's house. All the way there, Zixuan's tall, handsome figure kept flashing through my mind. He was always impeccably dressed, and his confident smile seemed to dispel all the gloom in my heart. At that moment, I only hoped he wouldn't be put in a difficult position. When I arrived at the Gu family mansion, the servant at the gate was slightly taken aback when he saw me, but quickly let me in.

I found Zixuan in the study. He was frowning at the documents on the table, his usually impeccable clothes slightly disheveled, and his hair not as neat as usual. A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes when he saw me, but it was quickly replaced by worry. "Fangfei, what brings you here?" His voice was a little hoarse. I stepped forward, took his hand, and said, "Zixuan, I've heard everything. We'll definitely figure something out." He gave a bitter smile: "Fangfei, this isn't so simple. That shipment is very important to the Gu family. If we can't get it back, the Gu family's cash flow will dry up, and many reform plans will have to be shelved."

I bit my lip and said firmly, "Zixuan, we can't just sit here and wait to die. I have an idea. We can investigate who detained the goods first, and then figure out a solution." Zixuan looked at me, a glimmer of hope in his eyes: "Fangfei, you're right. But the situation is so complicated right now, it might not be easy to find out." I gently patted his hand: "It's okay, we can start with our textile factory. I know some workers there; they're well-informed, maybe they can find out something." Zixuan nodded, and he squeezed my hand: "Fangfei, thank you. With you here, I feel much more at ease."
