Chapter 59 Exquisite Attire: The Struggle of the Republic of China Era – Business and Love, Mysterio
Splendid Attire: Lin Fangfei's Journey of Struggle in the Republican Era
The legendary business and love journey of a poor but academically gifted girl in Republican-era Shanghai.
The mysterious letter was like a phantom lurking in the darkness, exuding an alluring yet dangerous aura. My hand holding the letter trembled slightly, my eyes fixed on the brief words, my heart filled with doubt and wariness. The paper was somewhat rough, much like my current state of mind, filled with an uneasy, grainy texture.
"Who could this be? Is there really a solution?" I muttered to myself, my brow furrowed. Gu Zixuan walked over, and when he saw the letter in my hand, his expression also turned serious.
"Fangfei, this letter is suspicious. Could it be another trap set by the enemy?" Gu Zixuan said worriedly, gently gripping my shoulder, trying to give me some strength.
I looked up at him, my eyes filled with hesitation. "I know there are risks, but we're at our wits' end. If there's even the slightest chance of solving the problem of the damaged and stolen goods, I'm willing to try."
Su Yao also came over. Today she was wearing a light blue dress, her hair was simply tied up, and a few strands fell beside her cheeks. "I think we can't easily trust this letter, but we can first investigate the meeting place and the possible people."
I nodded, agreeing with Su Yao's point. So, we began investigating the meeting place mentioned in the letter—an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Shanghai.
I changed into a dark-colored cheongsam to better conceal myself. Gu Zixuan, on the other hand, wore a low-key black long gown and brought along a few reliable subordinates, just in case.
We quietly approached the abandoned warehouse and hid in a secluded corner to observe. The warehouse was surrounded by overgrown weeds, exuding an eerie atmosphere. The warehouse door was tightly shut, and there was no sound from the surroundings.
"It looks so quiet, could it be a trap?" I whispered to Gu Zixuan, my heart pounding involuntarily, a strange sense of tension rising within me.
Gu Zixuan squeezed my hand and gave me a reassuring look. "Whether it's a trap or not, we have to be careful."
Just as we were about to approach the warehouse, we suddenly heard the roar of a car engine. A black car slowly drove up and stopped in front of the warehouse. A man in a black suit got out of the car; he was wearing a hat pulled low, so we couldn't see his face.
"Who is he?" I was filled with curiosity and doubt.
The man looked around and then went into the warehouse.
"Should we follow them in?" Su Yao asked.
Gu Zixuan thought for a moment and said, "Let's wait and see if anyone else shows up."
After a while, no one else came. Gu Zixuan gave his men a wink, and then we cautiously headed towards the warehouse.
When we entered the warehouse, it was dimly lit, with only a few rays of sunlight filtering through the cracks in the dilapidated roof, creating streaks of light that swirled among the dust. The man stood in the middle of the warehouse, and upon hearing our footsteps, he slowly turned around.
"Miss Lin, Young Master Gu, you've finally arrived." The man's voice was low and hoarse, as if he was deliberately lowering his voice.
"Who are you? Why did you call us here?" I mustered my courage and stared intently at him, trying to find some clues in his expression.
The man chuckled, the sound echoing eerily in the empty warehouse. "Who I am isn't important. What's important is that I can help you solve the problem of damaged and stolen goods."
Gu Zixuan stepped forward and asked warily, "Why are you helping us? What's your purpose?"
The man, with his hands in his pockets, slowly approached us. "I have some grudges against those foreign powers, and I'm very unhappy to see them treating you like this. Besides, I also want a piece of the pie in Shanghai's textile industry."
I frowned. "How do you plan to help us?"
The man took a small notebook out of his pocket and handed it to me. "This notebook records the hiding places of those bandits and thugs, as well as evidence of their collusion with foreign forces. You can give this evidence to the police and let them deal with them."
I took the notebook, flipped through it, and saw that it did indeed contain a lot of detailed information. However, I still had some doubts. "Why do you have this evidence? How can we trust you?"
The man sighed. “Ms. Lin, I know it’s hard for you to believe me. But you have no other choice now. If you don’t believe me, your goods will continue to be damaged, and your business will face an even greater crisis.”
Gu Zixuan looked at me, and we exchanged a glance. Although this man was suspicious, we really didn't have a better option at the moment.
“Okay, we’ll believe you for now. But if we find out you’re lying to us, you won’t have a good ending,” Gu Zixuan said seriously.
The man smiled. "Don't worry, I won't cause trouble for myself. I hope we'll have the opportunity to cooperate again in the future."
After saying that, the man turned and left the warehouse.
We took the evidence to the police station, and based on the evidence we provided, the police quickly took action, and all the bandits and thugs were caught in one fell swoop, and our cargo transportation returned to normal.
Through this experience, our company gradually emerged from its predicament, orders increased, and our market share continued to expand. My relationship with Gu Zixuan also deepened through these trials and tribulations.
However, just when we thought everything was going well, we discovered that counterfeit products were appearing on the market. These counterfeit products were of very poor quality but were priced very low, attracting many unsuspecting consumers, which greatly impacted our brand image and sales performance.
Holding a counterfeit product, I trembled with rage. "How could these people be so shameless?" I said angrily, my eyes burning with fury.
Gu Zixuan was also furious; his face turned extremely grim. "We must find the source of these counterfeit goods and make them pay the price."
We began investigating the source of these counterfeit goods. After some effort, we discovered that they were produced in an underground factory. This factory was well-hidden and surrounded by numerous informants.
We decided to investigate this underground factory thoroughly and find the mastermind behind it. Gu Zixuan, Su Yao, and I meticulously devised a plan.
I dressed in ordinary cotton clothes, disguised myself as a female factory worker looking for work, and blended into the area where the underground factory was located. Gu Zixuan and Su Yao waited for me outside.
I inquired around the area about the location of the underground factory and finally found some suspicious signs in a dilapidated courtyard. I quietly approached the courtyard and peeked through the crack in the door. I saw many workers busily producing counterfeit products.
Just as I was about to observe further, I was suddenly spotted by someone.
"Who are you? What are you doing here?" a fierce-looking man walked over and asked.
I was startled and didn't know how to answer. This new crisis had once again plunged me into unknown danger. How could I extricate myself from this predicament?
That menacing-looking man was like a high wall suddenly appearing in front of me, instantly plunging me into extreme tension. My heart leaped into my throat, and something seemed to be stuck there, rendering me speechless for a moment. My eyes widened as I stared at his fleshy face, my mind blank, focused only on how to escape this dangerous situation.
"I...I'm here to look for a job," I stammered, trying to make my voice sound calm, but it still trembled slightly. I subconsciously took a small step back, my hands nervously clutching the hem of my clothes, an ordinary cotton garment that was now crumpled from my grip.
The man sized me up, his eyes filled with suspicion. "Looking for a job? This isn't a place for you." His voice was rough and hoarse, like sandpaper rubbing against the skin, every word carrying a strong sense of threat.
Just as I was at a loss, a voice came from the courtyard: "Qiang, what's going on?" A man wearing a silk mandarin jacket came out. He looked much more shrewd than the fierce man, and his eyes revealed a kind of cunning.
Ah Qiang turned to him and said, "Boss, this woman said she's here to look for a job, but I think she's very suspicious."
The man called "boss" walked up to me and slowly circled me, like a wolf surveying its prey. I could feel his gaze piercing me like needles, making me extremely uncomfortable.
"Why did you come here to look for a job?" he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down, and my mind raced as I came up with a plausible reason. "I heard that the wages here are high. My family is poor, and I really have no other choice, so I came here to try my luck."
He smiled, a smile that sent chills down my spine. "High wages? Hmph, this isn't an easy place. But judging by your appearance, you're just a weak woman; you can't cause any trouble. Ah Qiang, take her in and let her start as a handyman."
I was overjoyed; I hadn't expected to infiltrate so easily. But I also knew that every step from now on had to be taken with extreme caution, or my identity would be exposed.
A-Qiang led me into the courtyard, which was filled with a pungent chemical smell. The workers were busy at work, their faces showing exhaustion and numbness. I was taken to a corner and started doing odd jobs, but my eyes were secretly observing everything around me, searching for key information about this underground factory.
Gu Zixuan and Su Yao waited outside for a long time, but when I didn't come out, they started to worry.
"Fangfei's been inside for so long, I hope nothing bad has happened to her?" Su Yao said anxiously, pacing back and forth, her light purple dress swaying gently with her movements. Her brows were furrowed, her eyes filled with worry.
Gu Zixuan was also very anxious. His hands were clenched into fists, and his eyes were filled with determination. "Wait a little longer. If she doesn't come out yet, we'll rush in and find her." He was wearing a dark gray suit today, and his usually handsome face was now filled with worry.
Inside the underground factory, I discovered that the management was extremely chaotic, but their process for producing counterfeit goods was remarkably efficient. During my break, I secretly explored the factory, hoping to find some clues about the mastermind behind it all.
Suddenly, I spotted a ledger in a corner. A thought struck me, and I quietly walked over, picked it up, and flipped through it. It contained some transaction information, somewhat cryptic, but I could still discern a close connection between this underground factory and a mysterious businessman. This businessman seemed to be manipulating everything behind the scenes, yet his name wasn't written in the ledger.
Just as I was about to hide the ledger, Ah Qiang suddenly appeared behind me.
"What are you doing?" he shouted, snatching the ledger from my hand.
My heart sank to the bottom; I knew I'd been exposed. "I... I was just curious, taking a look around," I tried to explain, but my voice sounded so weak.
Ah Qiang sneered, "Hmph, do you think I'd believe you? You're definitely here to investigate us."
He grabbed my arm and dragged me into a room. My arm ached from his grip, and I struggled, filled with fear. "Let me go! What you're doing is illegal!" I shouted.
A-Qiang dragged me into the room, where the man in the silk mandarin jacket was sitting. When he saw me being brought in, a smug smile appeared on his face.
