Chapter 17 Heartbeats Don't Lie
Chapter 17 Heartbeats Don't Lie
When Lin Shiyu utters this title, it always carries a certain indescribable quality.
It wasn't deliberate flattery, nor was it distant politeness; rather, it was a joke tinged with intimacy. It was as if it were saying, "You're my boss," but also as if it were saying, "You're more than just my boss."
Without thinking too much about it, he put his phone in his pocket, turned around, and walked out of the ward.
At 5:30 p.m., Chen Mo returned to the Riverside Mansion.
The moment I opened the door, the aroma from the kitchen greeted me first.
Lin Shiyu, wearing a pink cat apron, was busy at the stove. Her hair was casually tied into a bun, revealing a clean nape of her neck, with a few wisps of hair hanging down beside her ears, swaying gently as she stirred the food. She exuded a gentle, homely charm.
"You're back?" She turned around, smiling naturally. "I made braised beef brisket; have something to eat first. At banquets like that, the food looks nice but doesn't taste good, so don't go hungry."
Several dishes were laid out on the stove: braised beef brisket, stir-fried seasonal vegetables, seaweed and egg drop soup, and a small dish of cucumber salad. Each dish was steaming hot, and the aromas mingled together, warming the whole house.
Chen Mo stood in the entryway, momentarily lost in thought.
This scene perfectly resembled what he had longed for for so long but never had: a home with its lights on, and someone who would wait for him to come home for dinner.
"What are you standing there for? Go change your clothes and eat it while it's hot," Lin Shiyu urged, her tone filled with natural intimacy, as if they had been living like this for a long time.
Chen Mo snapped out of his reverie, smiled, and turned to walk into the master bedroom.
Inside the closet, all the clothes he had bought were neatly hung up. Down jackets, jackets, shirts, and T-shirts were categorized by color and type, each piece hanging upright, even the hangers were facing the same direction.
A small note was stuck to the clothes hanger, with neat handwriting: "The shirt has been ironed, you can wear it directly."
Chen Mo looked at it for two seconds, then took out the Versace white shirt, the dark blue Armani jeans, and the Burberry casual leather shoes, and changed into them one by one.
Standing in front of the full-length mirror, the person in the mirror was completely different from before.
At this moment, he was wearing a white shirt, dark blue jeans, and brown leather shoes. These three items completely transformed his demeanor.
With broad shoulders and a narrow waist, he has an upright posture, like someone who has stepped out of a magazine cover. He is low-key, composed, yet sophisticated in every way.
Chen Mo nodded in satisfaction and walked out of the master bedroom.
Lin Shiyu was carrying dishes out of the kitchen when she looked up and saw him, and her hand paused for a moment.
She paused for a moment, a faint blush rising to her cheeks, and quickly lowered her head to put the plate away: "It looks beautiful."
Two words, as light as the wind.
Chen Mo smiled and sat down at the table: "Didn't you say you wanted to try on a dress? Go change, I'll change after I finish eating."
Lin Shiyu nodded, quickly walked into the second bedroom, and closed the door.
As soon as the door closed, she leaned against it, her hands covering her chest, feeling her heart pounding rapidly and heavily inside.
"Lin Shiyu, can't you be a little more sensible!" she cursed at herself inwardly. "It's just a nice new outfit, is it really that big of a deal?"
But my heart just wouldn't cooperate.
My mind was filled with the image of Chen Mo walking out of the master bedroom. He looked even better than those heavily edited photos in magazines.
Lin Shiyu took a few deep breaths to calm herself down.
She walked to the wardrobe, took out the black dress, and changed into it. The dress was made of soft, flowing fabric that hugged her figure perfectly without being too tight. The lace trim at the neckline and cuffs was the finishing touch, delicate yet understated.
Her hair was let down and draped over her shoulders, with a few simple curls done with a curling iron, giving it a fluffy and natural look. Her makeup was also a little heavier than usual, with slightly upturned eyeliner at the outer corners of her eyes and a bright red lipstick.
She looked at herself in the mirror and was fairly satisfied.
Although she's lost some weight, her bone structure, her temperament, and her natural beauty are still there. With a little makeup, the image of that college beauty queen is back.
She took a deep breath, pushed open the door, and went out.
Chen Mo had finished eating and was leaning back on the sofa scrolling through his phone. Hearing the door open, he looked up.
My gaze froze.
Lin Shiyu stood in the corridor, backlit, the silhouette of her black dress outlined in a graceful curve by the light behind her. Under the light, her features were exquisite and distinct, her large eyes bright and expressive, and the bright red of her lips transformed her from a pure school beauty into a more mature and assertive kind of beauty.
Chen Mo looked at her for three seconds and said, "Beautiful."
Two words, simple and direct, without any unnecessary embellishment.
Lin Shiyu's ears turned red. She lowered her head, pretending to straighten her skirt, and said softly, "Well...that's good then. Shall we go?"
"Walk."
Chen Mo stood up, picked up his car keys and phone, and went to the door to change his shoes.
The two walked out of the door, took the elevator down, and arrived at the underground parking garage.
Chen Mo pressed the car key, and the headlights of the silver-gray Cayenne Coupe flashed twice. He opened the driver's side door and got in, while Lin Shiyu sat in the passenger seat and fastened her seatbelt.
"Chen Mo," she suddenly spoke, "How is Guan Yao...?"
"The surgery was a success, and the recovery is going well." Chen Mo started the engine, and the car gave a deep roar. "He should be able to be discharged in about three to five days."
"That's good." Lin Shiyu nodded, paused for a moment, and then asked softly, "Does she... know about me?"
"understood."
"What did she say?"
Chen Mo thought for a moment and then told the truth: "She thinks I'm using you to annoy her."
Lin Shiyu paused for a moment, then gave a bitter smile: "She... still cares about you so much."
There was a subtle hint of bitterness in her voice, but she quickly masked it.
"Let's not talk about this anymore." Chen Mo shifted into reverse, and the car slowly pulled out of the parking space. "For tonight's event, just follow me. Don't be nervous, and don't try anything special. Just eat and drink as usual."
"Okay." Lin Shiyu nodded, took a deep breath, and calmed herself down.
The car drove out of the underground parking garage and merged into the evening rush hour traffic. Outside the window, the city lights gradually lit up in the twilight, neon lights and skyscrapers intertwining to create a bustling and vibrant scene.
Lin Shiyu leaned back in her seat, watching the street scene rushing past the window, and suddenly felt that her life seemed to have accelerated since last night.
From a rented room in an urban village to a luxury river-view mansion. From a pair of worn-out high heels to brand-new stilettos. From a down-on-her-luck girl working as a hostess in a bar to a woman wearing a black dress and driving a Porsche to a VIP dinner party.
All of this is because of one person.
She turned her head and looked at Chen Mo's profile. The lights on the dashboard outlined his sculpted features, his jawline sharp, his nose high, and his slightly pursed lips when he was focused on driving had an indescribable charm.
Lin Shiyu's heart started racing uncontrollably again.
She quickly turned her head to look out the window, silently repeating to herself: He's your boss, he's your benefactor, he's your former classmate's boyfriend... no, ex-boyfriend. Anyway, you can't have any improper thoughts about him.
But a heartbeat doesn't lie.
