Chapter 401 Kabuto the Pharmacist
Chapter 401 Kabuto the Pharmacist
The scene in the courtyard of the Konoha Orphanage was quite awkward.
The two- or three-year-old boy in Scorpion's arms was tugging at his collar, crying so hard that he could barely breathe, his tears and snot all over Scorpion's clothes.
"trouble."
Scorpion frowned, a hint of annoyance flashing in his eyes.
"Stop crying," Scorpion commanded dryly, trying to intimidate the brat with his flat tone.
As you can imagine, the little boy cried even harder.
"Oh dear, Senior Scorpion, you can't do it like that. The more you scold a child, the more scared he will be."
Shizune was stamping her feet in frustration, while Kana was frantically making faces with a rattle drum. Clearly, neither of them had any experience with the difficult task of soothing a child.
Just then, a pair of gentle hands lightly rested on Scorpion's arm.
"Let me try again."
The instigator, Yakushi Nono, stepped forward with a smile.
As expected of the director of the Konoha Orphanage, having cared for many orphans, she exudes a reassuring maternal glow.
She took a clean silk handkerchief from her pocket and gently wiped away the boy's tears and snot.
"Little one, don't cry."
Nonou's voice was as gentle as a spring breeze. She gently held the little boy's hand that was clutching the scorpion collar, and spoke in an extremely soothing rhythm while gently stroking the back of his hand with her fingertips.
"Come here, sister. I'll take you to eat some delicious snacks."
A miraculous scene unfolded.
With Nono's gentle voice and soothing gestures, the little boy's crying gradually subsided, turning into intermittent sobs.
He blinked his big, dark eyes, looked at Sasori's expressionless face, which was indeed like a stone, and then at Nono's gentle face full of smiles.
Finally, he slowly released his grip on Scorpion's collar and tentatively extended his short, chubby arm toward Nonou.
Nonou took the opportunity to hug him, gently patted his back, and hummed an unknown, soft nursery rhyme.
"call……"
Scorpion breathed a sigh of relief and quickly took two steps back.
He glanced disdainfully at his clothes, which were stained with tears and snot, and frowned again.
"That's amazing! Nono-neechan, you really know how to do things!" Kana watched in amazement and couldn't help but give her a thumbs up.
Jingyin also breathed a sigh of relief: "As expected of the dean, this child has really given us a hard time these past few days."
Nonou held the little boy, who was gradually calming down, and shook her head with a smile.
"Children are very sensitive; they can sense who is hostile towards them and who makes them feel safe."
Nono glanced at Sasori and teased, "It seems that although Sasori doesn't seem like much on the surface, he is actually a very gentle person inside. Otherwise, this child wouldn't be so clingy to you."
"boring."
Scorpion said something indifferently and turned his head away.
He didn't know why he had taken the child in; perhaps it was a lapse of judgment, or perhaps it reminded him of his own childhood.
However, he still has his grandmother by his side, while this child may have no relatives left.
"By the way, does this child have a name?" Nono asked, looking at the little one in her arms who was already rubbing his eyes and seemed to want to sleep.
Kana and Shizune exchanged a glance and shook their heads simultaneously.
"When we found him in the dilapidated house, he had nothing on him," Shizune said.
"Let's give him a name then." Nonou thought for a moment, "Since he's come to the orphanage, he'll take my surname, Yakushi, from now on. As for his given name..."
"How about calling it Daifuku? Or Wanzi!" Kana excitedly raised her hand to suggest, her mind filled with her favorite desserts.
"Rejected! Too casual!" Shizune rejected Kana's suggestion without hesitation.
Just as everyone was brainstorming, Scorpion's calm voice suddenly broke in.
"pocket."
"Huh?" The three of them looked at Scorpion at the same time.
Scorpion didn't look at them, but stared at the little boy who was almost asleep in Nonou's arms, and said calmly:
"He used to wear a tattered hat that looked like a helmet, so let's call him Kabuto."
"Yakushi Kabuto?"
Nonou pondered the name for a moment, then smiled and nodded.
"Kabuto means protection and tolerance, which is good. Let's call him Yakushi Kabuto."
"Yay! Kabuto, you're a member of the orphanage now!" Kana happily leaned over and gently pinched Kabuto's chubby cheeks.
Seemingly upon hearing his new name, Kabuto shifted in Nonou's arms, opened his eyes, and instead of looking at Kana who had been teasing him, turned his gaze to Sasori, who was standing a few steps away.
He reached out his little hand to Scorpion and stammered, "Scorpion, Brother Scorpion, hug me."
Scorpion frowned, about to turn and leave, when he saw tears welling up in the brat's big eyes again.
"..."
The scorpion stood frozen in place, unsure whether to leave or stay.
"It seems he really likes you, Sasori," Nonou said with a smile. "Kabuto, I have to go to work now, so I can't stay with you all the time. But I promise you, I'll come to see you often, right?"
As Nono spoke, she gave Sasori a meaningful look.
Sasori took a deep breath and looked into Kabuto's innocent eyes. He wanted to refuse, but he couldn't bring himself to say it. In the end, he nodded.
"Um."
Upon hearing this promise, Kabuto withdrew his little hand, obediently rested on Nonou's shoulder, and gave Sasori a sweet smile.
Looking at that smile, Scorpion suddenly felt a sensation he had never experienced before.
This feeling was completely different from when he was assembling those emotionless puppet parts.
He didn't say anything more, turned around and walked out of the orphanage.
"Little Scorpion, he's actually a pretty nice guy." Kana muttered to herself as she watched Scorpion's retreating figure.
"Alright, kids!"
Nono, holding the little bag, turned to look at the orphanage children who were still peeking out from behind the pillars in the corridor, her voice gentle yet loud.
"Everyone, come out! I've brought you lots of gifts, and I also want to introduce you to a new friend!"
"His name is Kabuto Yakushi. From today onwards, he's your little brother. Please take good care of him!"
The children ran out cheering and surrounded Nono and Kabuto.
Sunlight streamed into the orphanage's courtyard, filling it with vitality and hope.
