Chapter 17: Double Progress in Physics and Mathematics!
Chapter 17: Double Progress in Physics and Mathematics!
In the office, watching Han Chuan take away the documents related to the National High School Mathematics League, Cao Wen's face was full of emotion. Finally, he let out a long sigh and gently shook his head.
"What's wrong? Why aren't you coming in looking like this?"
Fang Jianyu, a physics teacher from the second year of high school, who had just walked in, laughed and teased Cao Wen when he saw his appearance.
Cao Wen glared at him irritably: "Can't you spit something out of your mouth?"
Fang Jianyu placed the homework he had just collected from his class on the table, glanced at it sideways, and said, "So what?"
He picked up the thermos on his desk, took a sip, and said with a smile, "Speaking of which, there's something else tonight that concerns your class, Class 09."
"Hmm? What is it?"
Fang Jianyu said with a smile, "I've been paying attention to the physics scores of Class 09 recently. There's a student named Han Chuan who only got 51 points on the last monthly physics exam. Guess how many points he got this time."
Upon hearing the name Han Chuan, Cao Wen instinctively looked over: "How much?"
Fang Jianyu: "Take a guess first. I remember seeing this student getting tutoring from you frequently during evening self-study sessions for the past month or so."
Cao Wen thought for a moment and said, "80?"
In the science comprehensive exam, physics has a full score of 110 points, with 66 points being the passing score. If a student can score above 70 points, it indicates that they have the potential to get into a top-tier university.
He originally wanted to give a score of 90 or even 100, because Han Chuan's performance during this period had indeed surprised him.
Since this little guy woke up to his senses, his learning ability has become, without exaggeration, almost unbelievably genius-level.
In less than two months, one can improve their math skills from a junior high school level to the point where they can solve the most challenging math problems on the college entrance exam.
However, considering that Han Chuan had been catching up on math for the past two months, he guessed a relatively moderate number.
Across from him, Fang Jianyu gently shook his head and said, "Wrong!"
"Is it too much or too little?" Cao Wen asked after a pause.
"91!"
Fang Jianyu stopped playing the riddle game and directly revealed a number, exclaiming with surprise, "This speed of progress is simply incredible!"
"If I hadn't stayed in my seat during the exam, and had checked the scores of the other students next to him, I would have suspected that he had copied other people's answers."
"In all my years of teaching physics, I've rarely seen anyone improve by nearly fifty points in just one month."
"91 points."
Cao Wen muttered something to himself, and although he was also a little surprised, he wasn't too shocked. He smiled and said, "His progress is indeed a bit fast, but it's normal for him."
"normal?"
Upon hearing this, Fang Jianyu looked over in astonishment, somewhat puzzled.
Cao Wen smiled, handed him the manuscript paper on his desk, and said, "Take a look at this."
Fang Jianyu took the draft paper, glanced at the problem, and then looked at the derivation process written on the scratch paper—sum-to-product, term splitting, guessing coefficients, and deducing the zero point...
Although he is a physics teacher, he can still understand this kind of basic mathematical knowledge.
"Interesting. Who is this? Which student in your class?"
Cao Wen: "The one you mentioned."
"Han Chuan?" Fang Jianyu was taken aback again.
"right!"
Cao Wen nodded and said, "Guess how many points he got on the math exam the month before last?"
"How much?" Fang Jianyu asked curiously.
"67 points."
"Um?"
Fang Jianyu hesitated for a moment and said, "It can't be that bad. Judging from the difficulty and solution approach, it should be worth at least 130 points."
Cao Wen smiled and said, "It's 67 points, but he got 94 points in the last monthly exam."
"A 26-point improvement in one month..."
Fang Jianyu stroked his chin and said, "That's interesting. You mean Han Chuan's grades have improved rapidly in the last two months?"
Cao Wen nodded and said, "Yes, and I saw it with my own eyes."
"He comes to my place for tutoring every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He used to have a weak foundation in junior high school, but now, in less than two months..."
After a pause, he added, "I reckon he should be able to get over 140 points on this month's math exam."
"hiss!"
Upon hearing this, Fang Jianyu gasped, "No way, is he cheating?! His grades have improved so fast!"
Cao Wen glanced at him and shook his head, saying, "Maybe he just didn't study seriously before."
He paused, put away the manuscript, and continued, "From the past month or so that I've been tutoring him, I don't know about his other subjects, but his talent in mathematics is, without exaggeration, at least in the top three of the students I've ever seen!"
"At the beginning, he even struggled with factoring in junior high school. I originally thought it would take him a whole semester to catch up on junior high school math."
"But in less than two months, he had thoroughly studied all the functions in the first compulsory course and the trigonometric functions in the fourth compulsory course, and not just by rote memorization, but by truly absorbing the knowledge."
"Tsk tsk."
Fang Jianyu clicked his tongue twice and asked curiously, "How did you suddenly realize that?"
Cao Wen shook his head and said, "I don't know, but this is a good thing. I'm going to give him a push and let him test the waters in a competition."
"competition?"
Fang Jianyu was genuinely surprised this time. Which competition student wasn't trained from the first year of high school, junior high school, or even earlier?
Even if a high school sophomore makes rapid progress, it probably has little to do with competitions, right?
Cao Wen: "Well, at his current pace, by the time the league starts in September, he will have already finished all the high school math content, and he will be able to catch up on the competition knowledge."
"Given his talent, I think if he keeps it up, winning a provincial award shouldn't be a problem. With a bit of luck, he might even be able to compete in the national competition."
Fang Jianyu clicked his tongue, a complex expression on his face—both gratified and a little envious.
"If he really makes it to the national finals, he'll be guaranteed admission to Tsinghua or Peking University. You, his math teacher, will really benefit from that."
"When will our physics group produce such a promising talent?"
Cao Wen glanced at him sideways, secretly pleased but not denying it.
It's 2009 now, and the admission policies of major universities haven't changed much yet. At this stage, students who can make it to the CMO national finals in the national high school competition can be guaranteed admission to Tsinghua and Peking Universities and are highly sought after.
In a few years, only students who make it into the national training team will be guaranteed admission to universities.
Although our school has produced students who have been admitted to Tsinghua and Peking Universities, it's not something that happens every year.
If a student can consistently be admitted to Tsinghua or Peking University without taking the entrance exam, it would indeed be a great achievement for the class's homeroom teacher and the corresponding subject teacher.
In a couple of years, it's not impossible for him to climb the ranks and become the dean of studies, or even hone his qualifications to become the vice principal.
As much joy Cao Wen felt, Fang Jianyu on the other side felt just as bitter.
As he pondered, he also considered it in his mind.
Han Chuan's math scores are improving rapidly, and his physics scores are improving just as fast.
He gained almost fifty points in less than two months; that's an incredible talent.
As he thought about it, his eyes lit up.
If we push him a bit, give him more guidance, and help him prepare for the national finals in physics, we might be able to benefit from his success!
