Chapter 9 The Battle of New York
Chapter 9 The Battle of New York
The journey was fraught with danger, though we escaped unscathed when we were chased by several enormous cattle.
At this moment, we will be driving out of this enormous city of New York in 20 minutes.
Li Ang shoved the gun into the driver's arms, then turned to the crowd and slowly began to speak.
"Next, I'll get off the bus, and this... will take over from this driver..." Li Ang asked the fat black driver who had been driving them all the way.
"What's your name again?"
"Mirian, just call me Mirian, sir."
"That's right, you should continue out of the city with Milian. I know you don't understand what I did just now and think I went too far, but I want to say something."
I'm human just like you. I can't save everyone; I'll only save those I want to save. Who knows what the situation is outside? Maybe it's safe, maybe it's worse.
The old man made an incredibly foolish decision, and perhaps he would make a second, or even a third. The girl's choice lacked thought; it was merely foolish kindness. In my opinion, staying here will only lead them to continuously offer the wrong options.
A ship has one captain. That was me just now, now it's Miriam. He'll take you away; after all, he has a child.
Li Ang turned to look at Milian.
"I bet you really want to go home. Believe in yourself, try your best to get back, and take these people with you."
Li Ang pressed the door open button himself, and the car door opened.
Milian picked up the gun that Leon had just thrown into his arms, at a loss for what to do.
"You don't need to leave, sir. Those monsters are simply beyond human capabilities."
Li Ang shook his head and slowly turned the knob on the communicator at his waist.
The communicator switched to a public channel, and the sound was immediately amplified.
"McDick Avenue, requesting backup! My colleagues are all dead, and now my leg is broken. A monster is chasing me! Please, save me!"
"Heavy casualties in Times Square, requesting assistance..."
"The Brady Church has more than ten wounded people requesting assistance..."
"The Kanash Library requests..."
There were wounded soldiers, police officers, and many civilians who were in various corners of New York, struggling for various reasons, sending requests into the channel for a chance to survive.
After the first wave of calls, Li Ang turned the volume down, stood next to the driver's seat, and held the communicator to his ear, listening to each distress call.
If he didn't have laser eyes or regeneration, and still had an ordinary human body, he could naturally leave in a car with a clear conscience.
With great power comes great responsibility—that is indeed a curse.
Although Li Ang had no actual combat experience, he was more capable than his injured colleagues who were constantly requesting to volunteer.
They're all still in the city, so what's the point of him running away?
For such a simple reason, not some grand principle, Li Ang decided to stay. These monsters were indeed terrifying. Perhaps he couldn't be of much help, perhaps he could only save a few people, but it was still better than running away without doing anything.
"You heard that too, right? There are still many people waiting to be rescued. You can go first."
"Then... then give me the gun, what will you do?"
Li Ang waved his hand to indicate that he didn't need to worry about it, and jumped out of the car.
The car didn't move, and the doors weren't even closed. Everyone in the car was looking at Li Ang.
"Hurry up and leave. If you leave the door open, the smell of people will spread out, and it will be even more dangerous later."
After a moment's hesitation, the car door slowly closed.
No one spoke; they just stared at Li Ang through the car window. The engine was started, but it didn't move for a long time.
Li Ang was too lazy to add any more drama, so he walked away by himself. It wasn't until he crossed the street corner and looked back that the bus slowly started moving and drove into the distance.
Li Ang walked down the street.
New York has never been deserted.
This felt very strange; he was the only one walking on the entire street, and neither cars nor monsters had appeared yet.
At most, you might catch a glimpse of a few corpses by the roadside; some were bitten to death, some were trampled to death, and some were hit by fleeing cars.
Li Ang was still wondering why there wasn't a single monster in this area, wondering if the region was already safe.
The building next to them was smashed open, and a two-story-tall cow opened its huge mouth, big enough to swallow a car, and lunged at them.
Li Ang was genuinely frightened.
With a forward lunge and roll, the giant beef cattle's gaping maw was just centimeters behind them.
Li Ang quickly rolled over and got up, retreating towards the monster.
Just to be on the safe side, I looked around to make sure no one was there before focusing my attention on my eyes.
This was his only weapon, and it was because of this eye that Li Ang dared to leave his only weapon in the car.
The crack in the pupil was slowly widening.
The giant beef cattle, having failed in their ambush, twisted their bodies and squeezed out of the building, knocking down a wall of bricks, tiles, and broken planks.
The monster we just saw was actually on the street next door, just one floor away. Most of the people who died here were eaten by it.
Upon smelling Li Ang, the brainless monster chose the fastest route, crashing through the four-story building blocking its way and charging to devour people.
Its speed is equivalent to an adult jogging, and it's comparable to the speed of the monsters we encountered before that were half its size.
This speed, which is obviously faster than other individuals of its kind, is the condition that allows it to grow so much.
Li Ang's entire eye was filled with deep black fissures.
From Li Ang's first-person perspective, it was a semi-transparent membrane that cast a dark blue filter over everything in his field of vision, including the giant monster in the center.
He felt that he had reached his current limit, and then his eyes relaxed slightly.
Like releasing a taut bowstring, two blue lasers, each as thick as half a forearm, shot out.
Slightly slower than a bullet, it struck the middle of the monster's body, the laser piercing through a hole of the same size.
The monster had no eyes, and its mouth took up half of its body. Li Ang aimed at the middle of the torso and blindly guessed the location of its heart.
Unfortunately, this laser eye wasn't very good at aiming, and this shot missed, but the effect was still good; the damage to this monster was easy.
The beef cattle were clearly in pain, but since they didn't have vocal organs, their bodies were trembling uncontrollably, and their charging posture had suddenly changed.
After a while, it turned back to Li Ang and charged straight toward him with its limbs braced against the ground.
After rolling, Li Ang kept retreating, and by now he had retreated fifty or sixty meters away. When the monster charged again, he had already charged up his strength for the second time. As the monster charged, he was met with a laser beam and at the same time, he ran to the right to avoid the monster's straight charge.
This time, unlike the first time, he didn't finish after just one launch.
Instead, the lasers fired continuously, piercing the monster's body and then, following Li Ang's movement, slicing the monster directly from the middle of its body to the left.
Black, oil-like, viscous blood gushed out from the linear wound that had been cut open, covering the ground beneath the monster's feet.
The monster's movements were contorted with pain, and the momentum of its heavy charge was too great for it to stop.
Li Ang had already run out, and it crashed straight into the row of buildings opposite where it had been standing. Its entire body fell down, and the broken wooden planks and bricks almost buried it.
Li Ang then removed the laser eye.
This time he released for a full 10 seconds, only feeling his eyes burning hot, a strange sensation, and for a brief moment, he couldn't even open his eyes.
However, he had already seen the scene of the giant monster being buried.
After letting out a sigh of relief, I sat on the ground, rubbing my eyes to slowly relax.
"Feed".
A voice sounded behind him.
Then came a loud crash, as if something had hit someone's car.
Li Ang immediately stood up. His vision hadn't fully recovered yet, but he could vaguely make out a figure.
"Claire?"
"Wrong, my name is Li Ziqing."
