Chapter 440 Simple Love
Chapter 440 Simple Love
In the days that followed, Shen Yuege truly experienced what it meant to be waited on hand and foot.
She used to think these six words were a derogatory term, used to describe people who were incredibly lazy.
Now she feels that these six words can actually be very heartwarming, it just depends on who lends a helping hand and who speaks up for you.
Lu Ran wakes up before her every morning.
He didn't wake up naturally; he couldn't sleep soundly because he had something on his mind.
He used to sleep with his phone off, completely unmoved, and wouldn't get up even if the alarm rang three times.
He's now in standby mode. He wakes up as soon as Shen Yuege turns over, and he listens intently even when she goes to the bathroom, only feeling at ease to continue sleeping when he hears the flushing sound.
While Shen Yuege was still asleep, he quietly got up, closed the bedroom door, and went to the kitchen to make breakfast.
Their breakfast used to be very simple: milk and bread or white porridge and pickled vegetables, which could be done in five minutes.
Things are different now. He looked up pregnancy recipes online, printed them out, and stuck them on the refrigerator door, making them every morning.
Today it's millet and red date porridge with steamed eggs; tomorrow it's oat milk with whole wheat bread; and the day after tomorrow it's soy milk with a vegetable sandwich.
Everything was done very carefully; the cooking time, saltiness, and combinations all had to be checked repeatedly.
When Shen Yuege woke up, breakfast was already laid out on the table, neither too hot nor too cold, just the right temperature to eat.
She sat down at the dining table, looking at the bowl of millet porridge and two side dishes in front of her, sometimes remaining silent for a few seconds.
It's not that I don't like it, it's just that it feels a bit unreal.
When she lived alone before, she would either skip breakfast or buy a steamed bun on the street and eat it while walking.
Now someone makes her different dishes every morning. It feels like something that hasn't been used in a long time has suddenly been restarted, and it takes a little time to get used to it.
"How are you feeling today? Still nauseous?" Lu Ran sat across from her, holding a cup of black coffee. He ate very simply, just two slices of toast with some peanut butter.
"I feel much better today. I didn't vomit when I woke up this morning."
"That means your pregnancy symptoms are gradually lessening. The doctor said it will get much better after the first three months, but you're only six weeks along, so it's still early. There might be some fluctuations later on, so be prepared."
Shen Yuege took a sip of porridge: "Can you please stop saying such discouraging things? I said I'm much better, and you said, 'There might be some relapses later.' Couldn't you just say, 'That's great, keep it up!'"
Lu Ran opened his mouth, wanting to say, "I'm just stating the facts," but seeing Shen Yuege's expression, he swallowed his words. "That's great, keep it up."
He repeated what Shen Yuege had just said, his tone dry and monotonous, as if he were reciting a textbook.
Shen Yuege was amused by his appearance, shook her head, and continued drinking her porridge.
After the meal, Lu Ran cleared the dishes. Shen Yuege wanted to help carry a plate, but Lu Ran glared at her and stopped her.
She put the plate down, raised her hands above her head in a gesture of surrender, and turned to go to the living room.
The coffee table in the living room has become Shen Yuege's exclusive territory.
On the coffee table are a fruit plate, a snack box, a water glass, a tissue box, a phone charger, a book, and a tablet computer.
The fruit platter changes every day; today it's strawberries and blueberries, tomorrow it's cherries and kiwis, and the day after tomorrow it's oranges and apples.
Everything was washed, cut, and plated by Lu Ran that morning; she even picked the strawberry leaves clean.
Shen Yuege sat down on the sofa, adjusted the cushions to a comfortable angle, pulled the blanket over her knees, and picked up her phone to browse for a while.
After scrolling for about ten minutes, my eyes got tired, so I switched to my tablet and watched two episodes of a variety show.
After watching the variety show, I felt bored again, so I picked up that book, flipped through a few pages, and then put it down.
She discovered that the biggest change after becoming pregnant was not physical, but temporal.
She used to never have enough time; she wished there were forty-eight hours in a day.
Now she has so much free time that she doesn't know how to fill it.
"Lu Ran," she called out towards the kitchen.
Lu Ran poked her head out from the kitchen: "What's wrong?"
I'm bored.
"If you're bored, just go to sleep. Pregnant women need to sleep more."
"I just woke up not long ago. Going back to sleep?"
"Then watch TV. Watch documentaries, the kind about nature, with beautiful visuals and gentle sound, perfect for relaxation."
"I don't want to watch documentaries. I want to go out for a walk."
Lu Ran dried his hands and came out of the kitchen, standing next to the sofa and looking at Shen Yuege.
He originally wanted to say, "The doctor said not to do strenuous exercise for the first three months," but after thinking about it, he realized that going out for a walk wasn't strenuous exercise, and staying cooped up at home wouldn't be good for his mood.
"Okay. Where to?"
"Just taking a stroll around the neighborhood. The weather is nice today, not too hot or too cold."
Lu Ran went to the bedroom to get a light jacket, helped Shen Yuege stand up from the sofa, and put the jacket on her.
Shen Yuege felt that he was not very skilled at dressing, and it took him several tries to zip up the zipper, but she didn't say anything.
The two walked in the neighborhood for fifteen minutes.
Lu Ran walked very slowly, even slower than the old man walking his dog.
Shen Yuege walked beside him, breathing in the outside air, and felt much more comfortable.
Staying at home is comfortable, but it can get boring after a while.
Stepping outside to look at the trees and flowers, listen to the birdsong and smell the grass, seems to lessen my pregnancy symptoms.
After walking for fifteen minutes, Lu Ran said it was time to go back.
Shen Yuege said to walk a little longer, but Lu Ran said fifteen minutes would be enough. The doctor said that moderate exercise is not necessarily better the more you do.
Shen Yuege glanced at him, said nothing, and followed him back.
Back home, Lu Ran settled her on the sofa, poured her a glass of warm water, moved the fruit plate next to her, and placed the remote control within her reach.
After doing all that, he opened his laptop, sat down at the other end of the sofa, and began to handle company matters.
Looking at his profile as he focused on his work, Shen Yuege suddenly felt that the scene was very harmonious.
One was resting on the sofa while pregnant, and the other was working on the other end of the sofa.
The two of them didn't speak, but they didn't feel awkward at all.
Sunlight streamed in through the window, falling on the floor. The room was quiet, save for the sounds of typing and the occasional turning of pages.
She used to think that love should be passionate and dramatic, like in TV dramas, where two people go through countless hardships to finally be together and live happily ever after.
Now she feels that love can also be quiet, without talking or doing anything special, just two people in one space, each doing their own thing, but knowing that the other is there.
The simplest love is the most genuine.
"Lu Ran," she suddenly spoke.
Lu Ran looked up from the screen: "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just wanted to call your name."
